Safety on London Buses
December 27 2023
London's bus network is one of the largest and busiest in the world. With over two billion passenger journeys made every year across more than 600 routes, 9,000 buses, and 19,000 stops, incidents are an unavoidable reality of operating at that scale. On average, roughly 3,000 accidents are reported each year, resulting in over 6,000 injuries.
This dashboard is a recreation of a Tableau dashboard originally designed by Erin McNulty, rebuilt using Observable Plot and D3. The dataset covers reported accidents between 2015 and mid-2018, sourced from Transport for London. It includes the location, date, operator, bus route, and the category and severity of each injury.
The four views below explore different dimensions of the data: how accident frequency changed over time, which boroughs recorded the most incidents, who was most often affected, and how serious those injuries typically were. The filters apply across the map and can be used to narrow down by route, operator, year, or victim type.
